Setting the scene for an EU-Brazil common ict market: Cloudscape Brazil success story & more

Encouraged by the success of the Cloudscape Europe series, now in its seventh year, the EU Brazil Cloud Connect rolled-out the first edition of Cloudscape Brazil on 20 October 2014 in Rio de Janeiro. High on the agenda was the ambition to shape cloud developments in both Brazil and Europe. Cloudscape Brazil set the bar high on serious policy issues around taxation, bandwidth, energy pricing and data protection, which are slowing down cloud adoption in Brazil.

The business connection included Wayra, Telefonica’s startup accelerator, and other large companies like IBM, Microsoft, Engineering and Indra Brazil. This is very important for identifying how EU Brazil Cloud Connect can enable the creation of new applications for the cloud by innovative entrepreneurs. Cloudscape Brazil connected the Start-up Brasil programme with Start-up Europe, offering a showcase of innovative entrepreneurs using cloud computing and helping identify potential new co-operation between Brazil and Europe.

A key feature was the cloud strategy for Brazilian research and education networks (NREN) led by Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (RNP). RNP explained how it has benefitted from best practices in Europe in developing the kind of cloud-based services that educational and research institutions need and want.
